What Is a Japanese Head Spa?

In short

A Japanese head spa is a multi-stage scalp and hair treatment combining a scalp, neck and shoulder massage with a warm-water cleanse, a deep-conditioning treatment, and a blow-dry. Longer versions add foot reflexology and a mini facial. Sessions run 60 to 90 minutes and are as much about nervous-system rest as hair care.

Warm water flowing through hair during a head spa treatment

The head spa arrived in the West from Japan, where scalp care has long been treated as its own discipline rather than an afterthought at the end of a haircut. It has become one of the most searched-for treatments in wellness, and it is comfortably the treatment our own clients talk about most.

The confusion worth clearing up first: a head spa is not a scalp massage. A scalp massage is one stage of it.

What actually happens during a head spa?

The treatment runs as a sequence, and each stage leads into the next. You stay clothed throughout, reclined in a treatment chair with your head supported over a basin.

The sequence, stage by stage

  1. Consultation and scalp check Your therapist looks at your scalp and hair — dryness, oiliness, flaking, product build-up, how your hair behaves — and picks the products for the session. Two or three minutes, but it changes everything that follows.
  2. Dry scalp, neck and shoulder massage Slow acupressure work across the scalp, into the temples and the base of the skull, then down through the neck and shoulders. This is the stage most people mean when they say the treatment “knocked them out”.
  3. Warm-water cleanse A double cleanse under flowing warm water, with the water pressure and temperature set to what you find comfortable. The scalp is worked through properly rather than rushed.
  4. Deep-conditioning treatment A mask or treatment oil is worked through the hair and left to sit. During this phase the therapist usually returns to the scalp, or moves on to the next stage while it works.
  5. Foot reflexology In the 75- and 90-minute treatments, sustained pressure-point work on the feet while the conditioner does its job. Lying down with your scalp warm and your feet being worked on is, by common consent, the best part.
  6. Mini facial In the 90-minute treatment: a cleanse, tone, hydrate, and eye treatment, with a facial massage as the products are applied.
  7. Blow-dry to finish Your hair is dried and styled to your preference. You leave looking deliberate rather than damp.

How long does a head spa take?

We offer three lengths, and they are genuinely different treatments rather than the same thing at different speeds:

Head spa treatment lengths compared
LengthIncludesPrice
60 minutesScalp check, dry scalp and neck massage, warm-water cleanse, conditioning treatment, blow-dry$150
75 minutesEverything above, plus foot reflexology and a longer scalp phase$200
90 minutesEverything above, plus a mini facial and eye treatment$240

If you are booking for the first time and can spare the time, the 90-minute is the one people come back for. If you are fitting it around a working day, the 60-minute still covers the scalp work that makes the treatment what it is.

How is it different from a scalp massage?

A scalp massage is hands on a dry head, usually for twenty or thirty minutes, often as an add-on. A head spa includes that, then adds the cleanse, the conditioning treatment, and the finish — and in the longer versions, reflexology and facial work as well. The difference is the sequence and the water, not just the length.

Who is it for?

In our experience it suits three groups particularly well. People who carry stress in their jaw, temples, and the base of their skull. People who spend the day on screens and have not properly relaxed their neck in months. And people who simply want an hour and a half where nothing is asked of them.

It also happens to be a good treatment if you have never booked anything at a spa before, because you stay clothed throughout.

What should I do beforehand?

Come with your hair as it is — there is no need to wash it first, and slightly unwashed hair is genuinely easier to work with. Skip heavy styling product on the day if you can. Allow a little extra time at the end rather than booking something immediately afterwards; most people are in no hurry to stand up.

Common questions

Does a head spa help with hair growth?

We describe the treatment by what it does rather than what it might cause. A head spa cleanses the scalp thoroughly, removes product build-up, and increases local circulation through massage. We do not make claims about hair growth, and we would be cautious of anyone who does. If you have concerns about hair loss, a dermatologist is the right person to see.

Will my hair be wet when I leave?

No. Every head spa finishes with a blow-dry, styled to your preference. You can leave and go straight on to something else.

Can I have a head spa if my hair is coloured or chemically treated?

Yes. Tell your therapist at the consultation and they will choose colour-safe products and adjust the water temperature. Let us know if you have had colour done in the last 48 hours.

How often should I book one?

Most of our regulars come every four to six weeks. There is no benefit to coming more often than every two to three weeks, and plenty of people book one or two a year purely as a treat.

Is the head spa available at all three locations?

The full head spa is offered at our Basking Ridge retreat only, which is where the treatment room and basin setup are. The 30-minute dry head and scalp treatment is available at all three.

Do I need to undress?

No. You stay fully clothed for the whole treatment. We will put a gown over your top to keep it dry during the cleanse.
